We have converted this welder to a heavy duty charger. We have added a 100 amp rectifier, a large heat sink and a fan that runs all the time. The charge current is adjustable in the range 10-40 amps. The welder works well at 24 vdc. You can use 2 in series for a 48 vdc system. You cannot use it as a welder as well as a charger after our modifications. The advantage of this type of charging is the low cost, no electronic components that might be spiked on low cost generator sets. Note the units have limited regulation and can overcharge the battery if left unattended. Use a hydrometer to determine the battery state of charge, then work out how much you need to put in and fill the generator with the correct amount of fuel so overcharging cannot occur, or install an external voltage regulator and diversion load such as a C40. These charger units are intended for bulk backup charging on low cost generator sets. Let your RE system finish off the charge. You will need a 3kW or larger generator set to use this charger.

We use this small unmodified welder that when you plug directly into one of or rectifier cabinets and can be used for unregulated charging 24vdc batteries banks directly at around 10-40 amps. If it over-heats reduce your charge rate by turning the knob on the front. It has over heat cut-out installed. If you plug this welder into the rectifier cabinet and then the dc output of this into the PV input of your MX60 you can turn this into a 12/24 vdc charger that will run much better and more efficiently.
